Velodrome and Len Lye
john v willshire | August 10, 2012
This is amazing (via Ross and others):
Chemical Brothers ‘Velodrome’ – London 2012 from Crystal CG on Vimeo.
It’s the video they played in the Velodrome at the beginning of each session, apparently. It’s been made by Crystal London, with music by the Chemical Brothers.
It feels not so much like the future as an alternate version of the present, one where the first TRON movie was made in Yorkshire rather than California, and this is the legacy it created.
Yet whilst TRON is an obvious reference point (and was in the brief, apparently) it also makes me think of Len Lye films, like this:
Len Lye was a New Zealand-born filmmaker who did a lot of work for The GPO Film Unit, pinoeering a lot of filmaking and animation techniques.
To see just how well his films work with a modern electronic soundtrack, have a look at this – it’s a track called “Post Office” by Bazarov, and uses original Len Lye footage as the visuals.
There’s stacks more Len Lye stuff on YouTube too. Enjoy.
