There is an interesting new study written up in Nature that basically comes to the following conclusion: music has gotten simpler and louder over the last 50 years. One implication the study highlights is that if you want to have a new “hit,” all you need to do is mix the sound up louder and further streamline the tonal changes of an old hit.
